Applying to study in Romania

Have you made up your mind to study abroad in Romania? You will have to fill the online application form. You will also need some basic documents to support your application. These document requirements differ with the university and the course you choose. The common requirements are:

  • Application form  for diploma recognition (EU, EEA or Swiss applicants)
  • For undergraduate applicants: an official copy of the Baccalaureate Diploma or equivalent
  • For postgraduate applicants: a certified copy of graduation certificate
  • Academic records translated into Romanian, English, French or German
  • Photocopy of birth certificate
  • A medical certificate explaining the student’s health status
  • A valid copy of passport
  • Two recent photos
  • Specific Language proficiency certificate, except for students coming from countries where the official language is the same as the language of instruction (Note: The language certificate can be received from the university after passing a test before admission)

Student Visa for Romania

Students coming from countries within the EU or European Economic Area (EEA), as well as those from Canada, Japan, Switzerland, Moldova, Croatia, South Korea, the USA and Serbia, do not need a visa to study in Romania. All others need to get a student visa before arrival in Romania. You need an admission letter to study at a university in Romania, from the Ministry of Education, to apply.

Here is the list of documents you need to submit for a student visa:

  • Acceptance letter from the Romanian Ministry of Education
  • Proof of tuition fees for one year.
  • Proof of sufficient funds to support the for the period mentioned in the visa.
  • Criminal record certificate.
  • Health insurance.
  • if the student is a minor, there will be a requirement of the letter of Approval from the parents in connection with the stay in Romania for study purposes.

International Students must pay the tuition fee in one instalment before making their visa application each year.  For students who do not need a Romanian student visa, fees can be paid up to 3 instalments. The visa processing time can be up to two months. Once you enter the country, you will need to obtain a residence permit.

Romania university fees

The Tuition fees in Romanian universities vary from the institution and course you choose. Generally, they are between RON 9000 and RON 24000 per year depending on the faculty and the home country of the student. Medicine might be slightly more expensive, reaching about RON 34000 per year at some Romanian universities.
Your cost of living in Romania will depend on where you choose to live. On average, for studying in Romania international students can expect a budget of between RON 1,400 and RON 3,300 per month as living expenses.

Study and work in Romania

An international student in Romania does not require a working permit, provided that they hold a residence permit for studying in the country. Non-EU students are allowed to work 4 hours per day. If you want to work more than this specified limit, you should apply for a work permit.
